Do your company a favour by going on Sick Leave

Hardworking employees are often regarded as those who works late night, work during vacations and never take sick leave (even to the extend of being in office when they’re obviously half-dead).

The above is a common perception of the management, at least in Malaysia (the environment I’m in).  The increasing number of sick leave is often talking points of HR department.  And people who comes back to work weekends do make themselves look busy and important.

I’d like to challenge the perception above and present my points that all the above is bad for the organization.

1 - If a person works late nights, the mind wouldn’t get sufficient rest, thus lack concentration and energy to focus at work the next day.  If this prolongs, the employee may be delivering sub-standard work most of the time.

2 - A vacation is meant for rest and relaxation.  A relaxed mind tend to be more creative and will be able to operate better.  Even machines need breaks at times, human need them too.

3 - Not taking sick leave may cause the illness to go worse due to insufficient rest, resulting in higher chances of mistakes in work done.

4 - If illness prolong or worsen due to insufficient rest, the company will end up paying higher medical bills.  Does this do justice to the company?

5 - There’s a multiplier effect in going to work sick.  Virus does spread, the number of work hours lost is the total number of colleagues that fell sick due to the virus spreading when one sick employee reports to work.  Once again, there’s the medical bills!

Don’t you think those points above are sufficient for us to make sure that we do justice to our employer by making full use of our vacations, sick leave and maintain work-life balance?
