Stop running away … Let’s make it happen!

Last Saturday was the much awaited Musical Charity Concert organized jointly by 13 Leo Clubs in Selangor.  It was a very good musical show (should I call it romance or comedy?) put together by collective effort of schools, colleges and university students.  While amateur in acting and stage performance, the show was indeed entertaining and well worth the RM15 ticket (especially when it goes to Charity).

Anyway, I wasn’t able to stay for the full event due to Chinese New Year open house to attend.  At least managed to stay for the opening story (which includes dances and songs) and also an inspiring speech by YB Hannah Yeoh (State Assembly Representative for Subang Jaya) for all the youth out there (the title of this post summarizes it)!

Here’s a picture of the opening ceremony (with me standing beside YB Hannah Yeoh):

Here’s a video of the musical show (too bad I wasn’t there to watch the whole thing):

Sorry went too far away from the original topic (got carried away by the good show put up by the Leo Club members).  Anyway, the theme of the show was “The Revival”.  That prompted YB Hannah Yeoh to talk about “The Revival of the Nation”.  Much of what she mentioned really made sense and is very inspiring.  Here’s a summary of it (hope I don’t get it wrong):

  • We need to believe … believe in the ability to revive the nation.  We need to all play a part in the success of the nation.
  • Over the last decade, there are so many youth who have given up hope and decided to migrate overseas.  They’re waiting for the nation to be revived before they return, but why not stay here and make it happen?
  • We need more youth who believe in themselves, who loves the country, and who are willing to make a difference to the nation.

All the above are true.  How many young Malaysians who are complaining about life here everyday are ready to take up the challenge and stand for election?  Knowing that becoming a “clean” politician means you’d probably be earning much lesser than your potential if you join the corporate world, how many is ready to make that sacrifice?  How many is ready to stand up and challenge the authority to make Malaysia a better place?

Sad to say, many has chosen the easier path of migration.  Moving to Australia, Singapore, UK, US … the list goes on.  The Youth of Malaysia, it’s time for us to make a commitment - To Stay, To Serve, and To STRIVE for our beloved country!

  1. Yu says:

So what are you gonna do since you never ran away?
It is actually my dream to revive the country. 2 years down the road maybe i’ll consider joining politics la… but i’m still a teenager now la.
But then I won’t migrate la. I’ll stay and strive.

  2. I feel that people opt to run away is because of the mentality of the society - culture.

As you mentioned in your previous post, “Convenience over safety and security”, it can be seen that our culture in Malaysia are “generally” selfish - They think of themselves and not about others. And I’m sure you know well about culture, its not about right or wrong, its about the way of life - people are brought up like this. I’m sure we hear a lot of this “Why do you want to care so much about others” , “Aiyo, don’t care la”, “Help for what, no use also”, “So what?”, “Why you want to know so much about others”…… Sometimes when i hear this, I myself feel pity for the nation. With such mentality, how are we going to work as a nation to fight/ challenge against other nation?

BUT, i also feel that these cultures are the Gen X mentality. With the current Gen Y and also the Net Gens, people are more open today. People are more concern about their environment, animals, people/ society and much more. Do you think so?

Anyway, I also feel that going overseas is definitely a eye-opening experience for people with such mentality. It’s not about RUNNING AWAY, it’s more of an experience to SEE and LEARN the cultures of others. I have to admit that I had a BIG culture shock when i touched down on Melbourne. People are more open to things and are more organised as a nation.

For example, we look at private security in our Taman Megah neighbourhood. Let’s ask ourselves whether our police are doing their job? isn’t it their job to do the rounding, instead of us hiring our “DIY police” to protect us?The other day i came across this news article in the local news of Melbourne, HeraldSun - http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/diy-police-force-for-frankston/story-e6frf7jo-1225830272697. They openly mentioned about police and pricate security in their news. Sometimes i asked myself, why can’t such news ever been publicized in the local news.
